Saung Angklung Udjo registrates Angklung, the Indonesian traditional music instrument made of bamboo, at UNESCO in order to protect the instrument as one of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. The registration was made on Wednesday, 26 August 2009, facilitated by the Department of Education, the Coordinating Ministry of Welfare Affairs, and the Department of Cultural and Tourism.
“So Angklung is registered as an intangible cultural heritage nomination from Indonesia,” the Operational Director of Saung Angklung Udjo, Satria Yanuar Akbar said in Bandung, Friday 28 August 2009. According to Satria, before the proposal of Angklung registration sent to UNESCO, his community along with other communities in Indonesia attended verification meeting which took place on Saung Udjo, on 11 August as speakers/sources.
According to Satria, the speakers are divided into two categories: 1) traditional Angklung communities, such as those from Banten, Ujungberung, and Kasepuhan Garut West Java, and 2) modern Angklung communities that gather in Saung Pak Daeng, such as Saung Angklung Udjo, Angklung communities at schools, and Angklung public communities. “At least 13 communities exist, although we actually have more than that,” he said.
At this stage, Satria awaits for the result of verification process conducted by UNESCO. Verification is necessary in order to prove whether or not Angklung has a significant role in daily life of many races in Indonesia. “If we pass the verification process, UNESCO then will issue a certificate and it means Angklung has been admitted as one cultural heritage of Indonesia, apart from wayang golek, keris, and batik that have been previously admitted.”
Even though Satria appreciates Government’s effort in facilitating the registration, he still considers the Government is less-responsive to such issue. As a comparison, Satria said, Republic of China Government has registered more than 1,000 cultural heritages within 10-year time. South Korean Government is already on the same way by registering their 100 cultural heritages more less.”
“Indonesia Government just started registering cultural heritages in 2002. Only four registered so far,” he said. In Malaysia, Angklung is considered as part of local culture.
For certain, all of us hope the best for the verification process to get succeeded. In addition, we would like to see a more proactive Indonesian Government in protecting Indonesia’s cultural heritage, one of many ways through this registration. Not only Government, we as Indonesians are also responsible for more loving and appreciating Indonesian culture.
